FRIEZE CARPET - Frieze [pronounced "free-zay"]
Frieze style carpets prices and area rugs to fit any budget.
Today's modern technology creates shorter fibers, and very tight coils thereby making it a great carpet or area rug choice. The traditional shag carpets of yester-year meets the 21st century. The tightly twisted fibers of frieze's give a smooth silky feel or nubby rough appearance to a carpet texture and pile. Some even feel so silky it is similar to rubbing a ducks back.
All frieze carpets are made of heat set yarns [usually nylon]. They are usually tightly twisted [ply] fibers and can be solid or multi-colored. The higher the twist level the better the wear. Of course the pile height and gauge is equally important to getting the best wear from frieze carpeting. The gauge is the closeness of the needles when stitching the carpet into the backing. The closer the tufting needles the tighter the gauge. The tighter the gauge the better the wear. Combine that with tight twist and good pile weight and you have an excellent carpet. Nylon friezes are available in beautiful colors and textures and are very resilient to wear and matting.
Frieze styles became popular on the west coast then migrated east. The casual look of so many of the frieze styles that are on the market are great for rooms that have heavy traffic and wear patterns. Most friezes are made of continuous filament nylon which is a superior yarn for that particular construction of carpet, compared to staple yarns you find in plush pile carpets.
There are even big bold nubbly frieze carpets on the market today. Shaw, Mohawk and Beaulieu all manufacture these popular looks along side the tighter twisted friezes. A popular look is the spaghetti style of frieze. One such look made by Beaulieu is called Ballymore. It wears extremely well in high traffic areas.
It's recommended you purchase a 45 ounce face weight or better to maintain good wear. A pile height of 1/2 to 3/4 inch would be ideal and a 1/8 inch gauge to 1/10 inch gauge would be ideal. Two tones and tones that include up to 4-5 colorations are also available. Of course multi tones help hide wear patterns and some stains. Shaw Industries has introduced some friezes that are made of recycled Anso Nylon [Go Green] that are even warranted on stairs for years.

FRIEZE Benefits ...
- Looks – You could say that the shags of the 60's has come back with a big bang and made more durable and less gaudy in and many more colorations.
- Durability - Filament nylon is a very strong and sturdy fiber that lends itself to installation applications even on stairs etc.
- Versatility – Colors are solid and made in a plush looking frieze for a formal look or stringy for a more contemporary look.
- Maintenance - You will want to have a good upright sweeper with a beater bar to keep the yarn nice and fresh. All three of the big mills mentioned above want you to have your frieze carpets steam cleaned by a member of the Carpet & Rug Cleaning Assn. That will assure you are meeting their criteria for implied warranties. You should have you're carpet cleaned professionally every 18-24 months.
